What happens if I do not take advice before signing?

A settlement agreement is only legally binding if you have received independent advice from a qualified solicitor. If you sign without taking advice, the agreement will have no legal effect — meaning your employer cannot rely on it to prevent you from bringing claims. Our solicitors will certify your advice and countersign the agreement.

What does the settlement payment include?

Settlement payments can include a termination payment (the first £30,000 of which is generally tax-free), payment in lieu of notice, accrued holiday pay, outstanding bonuses or commission, and in some cases a contribution to your legal fees. We will review exactly what is included in your agreement and whether any elements have been omitted or miscalculated.

Can I negotiate better terms?

In most cases, yes. We regularly negotiate improved financial payments, longer notice periods, stronger reference wording, and the removal of unreasonable post-termination restrictions. We will advise you honestly on what is achievable in your circumstances before approaching your employer.

How we work with clients remotely

All consultations are conducted by telephone or video call. You send us your settlement agreement by email, we carry out our review, then speak with you to go through our advice. The entire process — from first contact to signed and certified agreement — can be completed entirely remotely, with no need to visit an office.
