Settlement agreement FAQs

How accurate is the calculator?
The calculator uses the statutory redundancy formula and typical settlement ranges observed in practice. It gives a realistic ballpark — actual amounts depend on your specific facts, the strength of any legal claim, and what your employer agrees to. Use it as a starting point, then speak to a solicitor for a proper assessment.
Do I have to pay for a solicitor?
No. Your employer is required to pay a contribution towards your legal fees as part of the settlement. At Settlement Solicitors our fees are covered by your employer in the vast majority of cases — there is nothing to pay from your own pocket.
Is a settlement payment tax-free?
The first £30,000 of a termination payment — which typically includes statutory redundancy pay and any ex-gratia lump sum — can usually be paid free of income tax and National Insurance. Notice pay and holiday pay are generally taxable. Your solicitor will advise on the exact treatment for your payment.
What if I've been discriminated against?
Discrimination claims significantly strengthen your position and can substantially increase your settlement. Compensation for injury to feelings is also available and is not subject to the £30,000 tax-free limit. Select "Discrimination or harassment" in the calculator to see how this affects your estimate.
How is statutory redundancy pay calculated?
Statutory redundancy pay is calculated using your age, length of service (up to 20 years), and weekly pay (capped at £643 per week in 2024/25). The multiplier per year is: half a week's pay if you were under 22; one week's pay aged 22–40; and one and a half weeks' pay aged 41+. Maximum payment is £19,290.
Can I negotiate a higher settlement?
Yes — in many cases the initial offer is not the employer's best offer. Our solicitors regularly secure improvements by highlighting procedural failings, the strength of a potential claim, or the reputational risk of going to tribunal. You are under no obligation to accept the first figure.
